Air Products and FuelCell Energy team to develop infrastructure and third generation fuel cells

Air Products, the project coordinator for HyTEC and a producer of hydrogen fuel, has signed a memorandum of understanding with FuelCell Energy, a manufacturer of hydrogen fuel cells.

The two companies will begin working together to develop third generation of FuelCell Energy’s Direct FuelCell. These hydrogen energy systems are often used in power plants, providing a reliable source of energy for industrial ventures. The team will also work to bolster the market for stationary fuel cells around the world and will also promote fuel cells for transportation.

FuelCell Energy believes that partnering with Air Products will help establish a hydrogen fuel infrastructure around the world. Air Products has extensive experience in the world of chemicals and has been one of the leading producers of hydrogen gas for several years. This experience is likely to translate well into the fuel cell industry. This is not the first time the two have come together to work toward the progress of a common purpose, however. The pair is also working on hydrogen production projects in California.

The work of both companies will be welcomed by the auto industry, which has targeted hydrogen as its primary focus for the foreseeable future. By establishing a working hydrogen infrastructure, the duo expect to see favor for alternative energy vehicles grow. FuelCell Energy’s Direct FuelCell will still be a vital focus of the company, however, as the world of industry adopts alternative energy in an effort to reduce negative impact on the environment.

    27 new hydrogen stations opened worldwide in 2012

    Twenty-seven new hydrogen refuelling stations opened worldwide in 2012, bringing the total number of hydrogen refuelling stations in operation to 208 as of March 2013. This is the result of the fifth annual assessment by H2stations.org, a website of Ludwig-Bölkow-Systemtechnik (LBST) and TÜV SÜD. In 2012, eight stations have opened in North America, three in Asia and 16 in Europe, five of which are in Germany. The latter are owned by the Clean Energy Partnership (CEP) Project and are located in Hamburg, Berlin and Duesseldorf. Together with the refuelling station opened in Stuttgart in March 2013, this brings the number of hydrogen refuelling stations in Germany up to 33. Austria’s third hydrogen refuelling station was opened last year, while Turkey opened its first hydrogen refuelling station. In total, 80 hydrogen refuelling stations are currently operating in Europe, 76 in North America, three in South America and 49 in Asia. In addition, many countries are planning to build new stations. One new country is Slovenia, where specific plans for the construction of two hydrogen stations were published in 2012.     Linde Hydrogen Station started operating in Emeryville, California

    Linde’s new hydrogen refuelling station has begun operating at AC Transit’s Emeryville, California, fueling 12 fuel cell buses and up to 20 passenger cars a day. AC Transit is the transit bus operator for 13 cities in the East Bay Area, including Emeryville, Oakland and Berkeley. The Emeryville hydrogen fueling station, which began operating in 2011, is one of two Linde is supplying to AC Transit.     The innovation behind HyTEC

    In both London and Copenhagen, new hydrogen fuelling networks will be developed. This in itself is an improvement over the state of the art. The innovation of the HyTEC project is that the project will connect existing fuelling stations within a city wide refueling network.
